The world economy is undergoing a major transformation. Increased understanding of the interlinkages between social policies (for example, in housing, education and health care) and fiscal-financial policies is more important than ever. Fresh thinking is taking place in a number of development policy areas, and “global commons” issues require solutions. Reformers in countries worldwide are seeking domestic and global solutions in a volatile post-crisis world.The course will address the following topics:
- Development Challenges in the post-crisis world: The module focuses on providing analysis on the causes of the financial crisis and existing developmental challenges that developing countries are facing.
- Private Enterprise and Development: The module moves from a macro focus to a micro focus and explore the importance of firms and their relevance to economic growth, especially in relation to innovation.
- Rethinking Development Policy: This module brings to light the changing development paradigm and the macro levers needed to expedite growth and competitiveness in the economy.
- Human Development Policies: This module focuses on the factors of human development that are needed for an economy to grow, such as education, improved health and competitive labor markets.
